More tough competition

FIJI needs to play more high-level intense competition, says legendary Silver Ferns shooter, Irene Van Dyk.

Van Dyk is in the country to mentor teachers as part of the Pacific Sporting Partnership program launched earlier this year aimed at building the capability of Netball Fiji to deliver the game to young people.

"In 1999 I remember Fiji was a force to be reckoned with and they have always been a team that plays with a lot of heart and soul," she said.

"Ultimately you want them to play in a competition where it is elite and every game they play is hard and tough where they would not get physically tired, but mentally drained as well. I think at the moment they are not getting that competition.

"There are girls who have played in the New Zealand and Australian leagues so I think for those girls they might come home and tell other players what it is like playing in the high-performance environment week in week out.

"Competition in Fiji is not hard or tough enough and if they go to Australia and New Zealand then they would learn how high to set the bar."

The South African-born shooter played 145 caps for New Zealand and also played 72 matches for South Africa.

"I'm loving my stay in Fiji with the people being fantastic and I think it is the people which make your stay always nice and always make you feel at home," she said.
