100 reasons to celebrate

MERE Nukusere's special centennial (100th) birthday gift was nothing more than spending the entire day with her 34 grandchildren.

It was probably the most special moment for this cheerful lady from Naigani, Batiki in the Lomaiviti Group as in the lead-up to her big day, she asked her children what the occasion was with little knowledge at all that it was her 100th birthday celebration.

And the only thing she asked her daughter, Kasanita Qeranatabua, was to celebrate this special day with all her grandchildren.

And it happened on October 27 when families from around the country gathered at Namadi Heights to not only celebrate but honour the life of a person who has moulded them to be successful and be where they are today.

"Mum is a very cheerful lady who holds the importance of the vanua very dearly," Mrs Qeranatabua said.

"We always look up to her because she is the reason for our success and she has been with us for long that we have so much to learn from her.

"This is probably one of the most important days and celebrations of our lives as we are celebrating the life of someone who has been through life and who has moulded us to become who we are today."

Her actual birthday was on October 11, however, the family decided to celebrate it a week later when everyone found the right time to get together.

It was a celebration where the family got to reminisce on the good old days and talked about how their grandmother had been successful in life and her cheerful character had helped her to live a happy life.

While she may find it difficult to walk from point A to B as her legs are weak considering her age, it does not deter her from attending weekly matasiga (prayer sessions) and even welcomes guests to their Namadi Heights home.

"Mum always lives a healthy, happy life beginning from when she was young.

"It's her personality and her love to be with people is what has kept her going all these years.

"It has been a major life lesson as well to us as we need to learn a lot from her in terms of life and living a healthy one every day."

Bubu Mere also loves praying and her daughter acknowledges the fact that praying keeps her going daily.
