Students meet Kiwi rugby stars

THE New Zealand 7s team has created a special bond with the students of the Gospel School for The Deaf after their visit to the school yesterday.

The students had only seen players Tim Mikkelson, Scott Curry, Joe Ravouvou, Isaac Te Tamaki and Joe Webber on the television screens, but yesterday they got the opportunity to meet, shake hands and take photographs with the players.

Mikkelson said he loved to be in a rugby crazy country of Fiji.

"It was a good event and we always like to get into the community and Fiji is a mad and crazy 7s place to come to school and their culture on and we also performed haka for them," he said.

"Fiji and New Zealand always had massive rivalries against each other and the two teams have played each other for so long and something is very special there and it is awesome to be among the kids and hopefully they would support us.

"We have won some games and we have lost a fair share to Fiji as every time we play them we just know we have to be on our best performance or we will be beaten as Fiji is always a hard team to play."

New Zealand is pooled with Nauru and Cook Islands in Pool B of the Oceania 7s.

"The Oceania 7s is an international tournament which is definitely going to be tough and we have come here to play and it is our first time so we are going for a win," he said.

"We have been building for the last six weeks so hopefully we can go well this weekend."
