Tuwai's first big task

FIJI Airways Fiji 7s captain Jerry Tuwai will be playing his first tournament on home soil in the 2017 Oceania 7s which kicks off today at the ANZ Stadium in Suva.

And he has called on the players to raise to the challenge and win the tournament for the people of Fiji on home ground.

The Fiji 7s team was at the Nabua Primary School for a visit yesterday where the players met with students and teachers, took pictures and autographs which took a little longer than they expected.

Tuwai, 28, was not part of the team last year because of overseas commitment, but he is ready to deliver for Fiji.

"I am honoured to be the captain of the team, but it is nothing new as we have leaders in the team and for me personally the only thing which is new to me is wearing the Fiji 7s team jersey on home soil," he said.

"I have told the players to play their hearts out for Fiji. It cannot be more special playing on your home soil and in front of our loyal fans and be happy in whatever things you do since we will play for the fans.

"We do not want to lose in front of our fans."

Tuwai said the tournament would give the players the opportunity to work hard and improve before the start of the 2017/2018 HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series in Dubai later this month.

"Australia and New Zealand are always hard opponents for us, but we have trained for them and we do not want to give in easily playing on our home soil," Tuwai said.

"There are a lot of new players in the team and this tournament would given an opportunity for the players to bond together in terms of our combination and they are developing very well as we are preparing for the Dubai 7s."

Fiji plays New Caledonia in their first match at 4.40pm before playing American Samoa at 7.40pm tonight.
