WITH Fiji leadiung the campaign in the fight against climate change globally this week in Bonn, here at home Fijians have bonded the region together in whart was last night called the "Pacific Union."

While speaking at the 2017 Oceania Sevens Championship cocktail at the Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva, Minister for Youth and Sport, Laisenia Tuitubou said; "It is pleasing to note that Oceania Rugby has partnered with UN Women, having signed a memorandum of understanding, giving priority in grooming and empowering women teams to participate in rugby competitions.

"It is our strong belief as an island nation that access to sports and sporting activities must not be defined by gender. We have seen women making positive inroads in sports and people living with disabilities being able to take part in sporting activities.

"This is a great achievement for our Oceanic countries showing that the Pacific is in union and working towards a common goal.

"Oceania rugby players do not only give outstanding performances on the field, but are inspirational individuals to many aspiring young sporting individuals off the field.

"Although we are distant from each other, we must not forget that we are connected by the Pacific Ocean and represent the people of Oceania in all sporting and global events." he said.

The cocktail event was attended by teams, team officials, members of the diplomatic corps, Government ministers and invited guests. The tournament starts on Friday.
