Bid to develop strategic business plan

Filipe Naigulevu

PLANS are in place to develop a strategic business plan that will take a fairly small dairy farmers' cooperative in Tailevu to higher profit margins.

The Waidalice Chilling Centre (WCC) farmers' cooperative, made up of 65 dairy farmers from the Tailevu vicinity, are looking to increase and venture into bigger business activities.

The cooperative made a handsome net profit of $30,554 in 2017 and declared a total dividend of $8824.

Cooperative chairperson Hirday Lakhan said the new strategic business plan would include a vision, mission and values held by the entity.

"Like any other businesses, the goal should be clear. We should have all the cooperative members focused on the same goal," Mr Lakhan said during their annual general meeting yesterday.

"We want to see a proper guideline for the business. There a few things in the pipeline.

"Discussions are being held on taking up more and bigger business activities for the cooperative and expand on the general goods and services required by all members and the Northland Tailevu population at large."

The current business activities conducted by the cooperative are a nursery and car wash business, with more plans in the pipeline.

"In the short term, there are plans to fully utilise the nursery and improve the car wash business. In the medium term, the cooperative is looking at running a fully-fledged farmers shop and a meeting centre in Korovou," Mr Lakhan said.

The cooperative in the long term is also looking at developing their entity to become a rural transformation centre.

"The centre functions would include consolidating various member farm produce, value adding, packaging and marketing our products to up market outlets and exports," Mr Lakhan said.
