Mounting pressure on team

The Melbourne Cup fever did steal people's focus yesterday. Like many other punters, I had an enjoyable time following the race. On the other hand, I am slightly concerned about our 7s team's recent performances. The Australian 7s team was on fire as they lifted the cup beating the hosts in a tight contest at the Silicon 7s tournament.

Australia has won three tournaments in a row and looks the team to beat at the Oceania 7s. Fiji, which is on a rebuilding phase, went down to Australia 0-29, drew with Japan and beat minnows China. We lost in the cup quarter-final to USA and then got stretched by Samoa, which is also on a rebuilding phase. The consolation was that our boys managed to beat New Zealand.

Australia, under Andy Friend, had a good workout building up to the Dubai 7s and will test their final team at the Oceania 7s in Suva. Meanwhile, Fiji was represented by two sets of teams and two sets of coaches. Come Friday, our boys will be tested at home and I am just curious to know if our boys have had a good test building up to the Oceania 7s.

Coming up with excuses that there was lack of time to prepare or we have a new set of boys will not do any good. The story is simple. Get a team and let the boys test their combination. It is important that the chosen leader steer our boys when the going gets tough. As we celebrate the success of the Melbourne Cup, let's start counting the hours to the 2017 Oceania 7s.
