PUNTERS rushed off from work to place their last-minute bets for the 2017 Melbourne Cup race which was held at the Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne, Australia yesterday.

The race which stops the nation in Australia was won by Rekindling which was trained by Joseph O'Brien and the jockey was Corey Brown.

The Grants Betting Ltd was crowded by many people who came to test their luck and hoped to returned home richer.

Grants Betting Ltd general manager Vijendra Sundar said the response was very low this year.

"We were not happy with the response from people who came for the betting," he said.

"The response was very low compared with previous years where a lot of people would turn up for betting.

"One of the reasons could be that people could be betting on online and hence they did not come to us."

Winning jockey Corey Brown could not believe what he had achieved in the race.

"I can't believe it," Brown told news.com.au website.

"Oh honestly, I chased the ride about six weeks ago and with a light weight (thinking I was) a big chance to get on him.

"I can't believe it. I have been back here from overseas about nine months and slowly and surely getting back to where I was. Mate, again I can't believe it."

The owner of the horse Lloud Williams was also thrilled with the win.

"An absolute dream. I am so thrilled," he told news.com.au.

"It is terribly exciting. I can't put it into words to be perfectly honest.

"Just to do it with this 24-year-old (trainer Joseph O'Brien). He has been taking the world on. I thought that this horse had some chance and I thought that his run in the Ledger was good and his three-year-old form over there has been very good in the Doncaster Cup."

Johannes Vermeer came second while Max Dynamite came third.
