FIJI Airways Fijiana 7s coach Iliesa Tanivula not only aims to get more players in to their squad but he wants more players to compete in local tournaments.

Tanivula wants to get more players playing in the local competitions as it would greatly increase their player base.

"The challenge that we have here is that we need more players for the upcoming seasons, because it will be a long season and we will need to rest a few players from time to time," Tanivula said.

"So when we hit major tournaments like the Commonwealth Games and the Sevens World Cup these players are fit, rested and ready to go.

He said other big national teams usually had more than 40 players in their squads for every season.

However, the Oceania Rugby media statement revealed that the Kingdom of Tonga have also begun a similar pathway in regards to promoting gender equality in rugby.

A game, described by Talitha Project Tonga official Vanessa Heleta, often perceived as a sport for men.

"The Talitha Project and Tonga Women's Rugby Association are committed to create more opportunities for girls and women to play rugby and challenging rigid gender roles and stereotypes through sport," Heleta said in a statement.

The Talitha Project and Tonga Women's Rugby Association partnered for the first time, promoting "gender equality" and women's equal participation, with UN Women's support in organising the first Kingdom Sevens Rugby Tournament, earlier last month.
