Support for Wairiki 7s

SUPPORT from business community and hoteliers on the Garden Island of Taveuni is vital for next month's Fiji Bitter Wairiki Sevens, says co-ordinator Jone Katoni.

In celebrating its 10th anniversary, organisers would provide sheds at no cost for wiling sponsors.

"We need them to be part of this event because it's a decade old and it has developed good rugby players for the island," Katoni said.

"Everyone on Taveuni needs to be part of this because such rugby events has produced national reps. We are inviting tourists to be part of this event and they can bring their own drinks. We will provide sheds."

Katoni said 20 teams had expressed interest to be part of the tournament.

"The teams need to register by November 20 because there is a high demand for participation and we need to limit the number of teams," he said.

"We are looking at 32 teams, but over the past years, we have increased it to more than 40 because of the high demand.

"Women's rugby team will be included as curtainraiser to the final, so we are liaising with the Marist Sea Hawks if they could be part of this."

The winning prizes include $7000 for the main competition and $3000 for runner up.

Teams need to pay $500 registration fee for the main competition and $150 for the under-19 category.
