Showdown time

The 157th Melbourne Cup is finally here and 24 of the best stayers in the world are set to contest "the race that stops a nation" at Flemington.

Last year after a gruelling encounter, German trained horse Almandin starred ahead of Heartbreak City, Hartnell and Qewy as jockey Lloyd Williams set a stunner by becoming a five-time champion.

Today thousands of punters will try their luck at various betting outlets.

In Fiji, Grants Betting House will be full as the fever from the Melbourne Cup grips our nation.

People from all walks of life are expected to be glued to the TV to watch the race live.

Almandin won the Melbourne Cup 12 months ago and has the chance to become the first horse since Makybe Diva to defend the title.

Winning the Melbourne Cup two years in a row is far from easy and it does take a special horse to do so.

It will all boil down to luck, preparation and commitment.

My best wishes to all the Melbourne Cup fans at home and away from home. Let's enjoy the Melbourne Cup festivity.

On the other hand, I must thank the Fiji Bati side for showing patriotism, unity and courage to slay the Welsh Dragons in Townsville. The 72-6 scoreline was the highest ever raked in by the Bati.

However, the real test of character will come against Italy and I hope that Potter will psyche his troops for this battle well.

Finally, there are a lot of lessons to be learnt for the Drua side in its first year in the NRC.

The 57-21 drubbing at the hands of Queensland Country should make Fiji a better team come 2018.

Vinaka vakalevu boys and Seruvakula!
