Fijian identity

FIJIAN national rugby players were reminded of their identity as they represented the country in the Rugby League World Cup.

The high commissioner to Australia, Yogesh Punja spoke to the players minutes before they departed the Mercure Hotel for their match against Wales last night.

"Fijians are remembered for two things — their belief in God and their culture," Punja said.

"I know you are all very skilled players and that most of you live in Australia.

"But you have Fijian blood flowing through you.

"You must always remember that you are representing Fiji and the whole country is watching."

Punja also expressed the need for players to be humble.

Fijian supporters came out in numbers last night to support the team play its second match against Wales in Townsville last night.

Meanwhile, the PNG Kumuls defeated Ireland 14-6 in their second pool match and would likely be playing in the quarters against England.

Fiji thrashed USA 58-12 a fortnight ago and will face Italy in its final RLWC pool game next week.
