Game mode for Bati

Eloni Vunakece's Diary
Sunday, November 05, 2017

I'm sitting in the bus travelling back from Crystal Creek on our first off day for the week before we play against Wales.

The land is dry and apparently just had its first real rain in two years. You can't tell.

The water was icy cool up there, a refreshing break from the burning heat of the Townsville sun. It is like back home in the hot West, the heat here is not as humid though.

The water provides a good reboot from the tough previous two days of training. Korbin and I went for a wander and found a dead snake.

That was about the wildlife highlight ... I expected to see a crocodile at least and I'm sure we were surrounded by hundreds of killer snakes but we are the Bati, so we stood strong even though we couldn't see our enemy.

We have a great opportunity ahead of us to really stamp our big feet down in this Rugby League World Cup this weekend against a Welsh team, which is strong though still licking its wounds from a tough encounter against our tough Melanesian brothers — Papua New Guinea.

We are preparing well and were joined in camp by one of our young brothers Pio Sokobalavu, who will add extra grunt to our team in the place of Korbin Sims and Kane Evans.

I felt the full brunt of his frame in our first opposed session where the young "bull" tried and definitely tested my mantle on several occasions.

Nothing a few stray elbows can't fix to level the age gap of nine years.

Efficiency is key in these types of camps and the saved time can be better dedicated to recovery or solidifying the bonds among the playing group over a game of FIFA or ping pong.

Vinaka to the staff!

Final prep commences Saturday afternoon (yesterday) with the captain's run again at the former home of Ashton and Tariq Sims, 1300Smiles Stadium, the same ground of last week's victory over USA.

Now back to either the classic 5-minute catnap or my sudoku. Catnap it is. Moce!
