USP claims inter-tertiary football tourney

UNIVERSITY of the South Pacific staff football club won the inaugural inter-tertiary staff football competition at the Central College grounds in Lautoka last Saturday.

The team defeated University of Fiji and Fiji National University in the round robin play a statement read.

USPSFC president Iresh Lal commended University of Fiji for being a good host.

"The competition was a successful one and in an essence, a source of building a friendly relationship between staff of the three universities and creating a sense of networking," he said in a press release.

The competition was the first one where the three universities played each other.

"As part of the formal program, Tarunesh Reddy, who is the vice-president of the Fiji Football Association was the chief guest. He applauded the effort by the three universities and encouraged the continuation of such initiative in the future as it promoted a healthy relationship between each institution," the press release read.

"He added that Fiji FA promoted such a constructive activity at the community level and would be pleased to support it in the future. In addition to the main awards, there were incentives for other categories such as the best player, most disciplined team and the best dressed team.

"As judged by the chief guest, the best dressed team was awarded to UOF and they also received the award for the most disciplined team. The award for the best player of the competition was won by USP's Deepal Singh, who was also the highest goal scorer.

"In order to give a formal structure and continuity to this value-adding initiative between the higher education institutes, it was communally agreed that an association be formed that would provide oversight on the organisation of such a competition on an annual basis."

The tripartite body would be known as the Inter-tertiary Staff Football Association (ITSFA) with the office bearers where the president's role would be rotated on an annual basis as the host for the competition take turn.
