Rain spoils race

A HEAVY downpour shattered the hopes of hundreds of horse owners aiming to stamp their mark at the inaugural Sabeto Race yesterday.

The races started well but just after the completion of four races, the heavens opened up and poured heavy rain that forced the cancellation of the event — much to the disappointment of horse racing fans, horse owners, jockeys, government officials, sponsors and organisers of the event.

For the safety of the horses and the jockeys, races co-ordinator Kim Beddoes decided to put an end to the event.

However, Beddoes said the cancellation would not deter her team from organising a bigger and better event for next year.

She said she could not do much to stop the races for the safety of the participants and thanked all those who turned up in huge numbers for their first race.

"Horses came from all over the country including one from Labasa and it is disappointing that after the fourth race, I have to call off the races because of the rain," said Beddoes.

"I have to call the race off for the safety and security not only for the horses but also the jockeys.

"Nonetheless I am not disapponted, I think the show of numbers today alone shows the interest and we will be back again in 2018.

"It will be a little bit bigger and better and we are also thinking of bringing the date earlier to avoid the rain."

Beddoes said there was room for improvements since this was her first event.

She thanked all the sponsors, participants, fans and government officials for a good turnout.

Minister for Industry, Trade, Tourism, Land and Mineral Resources Faiyaz Koya officially opened the event.
