Balancing act for prop Mawi

FIJI Airways Drua tighthead prop, Eroni Mawi is like a tight rope walker who walks on a rope across two tall buildings.

A wrong step, strong winds, lack of fitness or losing concentration can cause a fall, and even death.

Mawi, 20, of Tovu, Totoya, Lau, is among upcoming Fijian rugby players closing in on their oval ball dreams.

Tomorrow, while he wears the number one Fiji Airways Drua jersey, there's another responsibility in his life that is left hanging with his clothes in the changing room in Toowoomba, Australia.

His books. He is a student of the University of the South Pacific, and like a tight rope walker, he balances rugby and study.

"I thank the Almighty for giving me the strength to play rugby," the former Fiji under-20 captain said.

Yesterday he was farewelled by his family at Nausori International Airport.

His mother, Tema is his best mentor.

"He knows my demand," she said as the family cuddled for a last group hug at about 6am yesterday before his eldest son disappeared through the departure lounge entrance for the flight to Australia.

"My advice to him is if he wants to play rugby, then he has to balance it with his education. Education is his life and his future because after rugby what he learned today will take care of him tomorrow."

She is from Tovu, Totoya, Lau.
