SUNSHINE Special School was crowned the champion of the 2017 Fiji Special and Inclusive Education National Games that ended at Lautoka's Churchill Park yesterday.

The Lautoka-based school edged Hilton Special School scooping a total of 34 gold medals to win the top award.

Hilton settled for the second spot with 31 gold medals followed by Gospel School for the Deaf with 22 gold.

Sigatoka School for Special Education finished on fourth spot with 21 gold medals with Fiji School for the Blind settling for the fifth position.

A total of 20 schools from all over the country competed in the three-day event.

Chief guest Praveen Kumar Bala congratulated the winners for their achievements and thanked all participants for giving their best for their respective schools.

He said the national games for people with disabilities had produced a lot of national reps for the Paralympics, Special Olympics and as well as the Deaf Olympics.

"The most highlighted success story of the games was when the assistant minister for sports Iliesa Delana won the first gold medal during the 2012 London Paralympics," said Bala.

"We are proud that it took a person living with disability to win the first gold medal for Fiji at the Olympics."

Bala said Government had plans to redevelop stadiums to include facilities that were inclusive of special people.

"It is important that we implement the requirements for this inclusivity so that we can best provide the required infrastructure, amnesties and services for all Fijians living with disabilities."

He assured the participants that Churchill Park would be available for any special games free of charge in the near future.
