Increase in CMF 7s prize

THE success of the Christian Mission Fellowship 7s rugby tournament has prompted the organisers to increase the winning prizemoney next year from the current $10,000.

Head of organsing committee Esava Takirua said they were informed by senior pastors about the increase of prizes.

"We don't know how much it will be next year but we have been told that the prizes will increase because the tournament has become successful over the years," Takirua said.

"The number of teams keep increasing and we are glad that the northern teams are also becoming stronger.

"Frist Light Taveuni and Cross of Victory of Taveuni are northern hopefuls for future tournaments we organise.

"The combination just gets sweeter."

Last week's final at Subrail Park in Labasa between Nadi-based McDonald's Saunaka and First Light Taveuni, Takirua said proved the strength of northern teams.

Frist Light Taveuni lost to Masivesi Dakuwaqa's team by 5-7.

But Takirua believes the tournament has helped sharpen the skills of players in the North. The women's category, he added would be even bigger next year.

"We see the need to include women's rugby and to develop it in the North and that is our desire as organisers of this tournament," he said.

"The competition among rugby players is also getting tougher and it's encouraging to know that this kind of tournament helps develop skills of players."
