More than just a dream

STARTING a food-oriented small business can be more than just a dream.

Many people dream of taking their favourite recipes and turning their love for baking or cooking into their own little business

This is true for Kalesi Save a pastry seller at the Suva Municipal Market.

Ms Save's decision to sell emerged after her husband a professional driver retired last year.

Originally from Waikete in Tailevu, the 54-year-old lives in Cautata Village, Tailevu with her husband who now looks after their farm. The mother-of-one said she never regretted her decision to sell at the market and enjoyed what she did.

Ms Save said the money she earned helped make ends meet for her family. She sells three days a week on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays and leaves her home in Cautata at 4:55am to beat the traffic.

Ms Save sells babakau (pancake with yeast), roti vakalolo (roti in thick coconut cream) and vakalavalava (Fijian bread) She prepares 15 parcels of roti in vakalolo sold for $2 a bag, several puddings for $2 each, 20 bags of babakau for $2 a bag and three trays of vakalavalava sold for $2.50 each.

Ms Save enjoys selling because she is able to learn new things such as how to run her small business, how to manage money wisely and most importantly makes new friends with other vendors.

She sells from 7am to 10am and earns $100 or more in a day. "I have regular clients who buy from me and this makes selling and my day a lot easier because I don't have to sell the whole day like some of my fellow vendors," Ms Save said.

"By 11am I'm done for the day and return home satisfied with what I've earned."

She said the pastries were freshly made early in the mornings and done in such a way to satisfy clients' cravings.

She's stationed at the pastry corner along the Suva Municipal Market corridor with her goodies.
