Get the right workwear

MANY employers are aware of their basic duty of care when providing personal protective equipment (PPE) at work, but do they really consider the value and the importance of health and safety workwear in their organisation?

Workplace accidents can occur anywhere and at any time. When an employee has to conduct a task in a risky environment, and if they do not feel protected then they will always keep an eye out on protecting themselves rather than carrying out the task efficiently and effectively.

Issuing basic protective workwear does help to overcome this risk, but does it really place a value on helping the employee to be as comfortable and productive as they possibly could be?

When considering purchasing new assets for a company, management will assess the best equipment looking at issues of output, performance and value.

If the outputs can be improved on a new piece of equipment, then the cost can be justified. Is this the same when considering your employees and their health and safety workwear?

Too often managers just provide the basic level of protection to cover the risk, but have they really thought about the quality and other options available?

Poor quality of workwear will make the worker feel insufficiently protected hence this would impact on their productivity.

It is vital for every business to ensure that the workwear and PPE they use is right for the hazard and reduces exposure to the level required to protect the wearer's health. This will allow them to feel safe when carrying out a hazardous task. Staff members who are supplied with well fitted, quality workwear are more likely to feel valued and would be more motivated; ultimately this can help with the retention and recruitment of staff members. The workwear apparel worn by the worker must always be properly evaluated before use, to make sure it is fit for the purpose!

Businesses should always consider weighing up risk with value. Too often businesses end up choosing workwear based on the "price" factor only without taking into consideration the "value".

Lowly priced workwear manufactured poorly with poor quality raw materials can have fatal consequences on the wearer.

For example, loose fitted protective clothing can easily get caught into the machinery; fading of Hi-Viz colours makes the garment non-compliant to daytime visibility; poor quality reflector tapes would dissipate easily and making the worker not be visible at night-time; all these instances have the potential of causing a serious accident to the worker!
