Fiji double down at training

Friday, November 03, 2017

Despite being heavy favourites to defeat Wales on Sunday night, the Fiji team isn't going easy at training in the 30C heat in Townsville this week.

They're also wary of allowing any complacency into the team, and it showed as they completed training before doing extras.

Forward Ben Nakubuwai isn't letting last week's success dictate this week's performance, and stressed the Bati take every team seriously.

"We're preparing as if every team is strong. You can't go out there thinking that it's going to be an easy game because if you go out there in that mind-set you're going to get smacked," Nakubuwai said.

The 58-12 victory over the USA last week has set a high bar but has also boosted the attitude in the Fiji camp, with every player eager to live up to the standard they have set themselves.

"Everyone's training hard and joking around and having a good time; we just really enjoy each other's company," the 21-year-old said.

Winger Marcelo Montoya is also enjoying his time in the Fijian camp, and is ready to make sure Fiji does as much of a job on Wales as they did on the USA.

The winger is also ready for Wales to come out firing after being dusted 50-4 by Papua New Guinea last week.

"(The confidence) is very high, still knowing we've got a job to do on Sunday we haven't slowed down our training at all," Montoya said.

"We've lifted the ante as well at training, we want to go out there on Sunday and put our best foot forward.

"We think (Wales are) going to come out at a hundred miles an hour and we know we've got a job to do because obviously they lost up there and it was a big loss for them so they're training hard this week, looking forward to rolling on us."
