New sevens talent

FIJI Airways national 7s coach Gareth Baber identified some new talents at the Central Coast 7s in Australia who could be part of the extended training squad for the World Rugby HSBC Sevens Series.

One of the main reasons for Baber to travel to Sydney last weekend was to scout for players.

The Central Coast 7s featured local teams like Tabadamu, Uluinakau and Island Breeze. A selection side, the Stallions, also featured players from Fiji.

The Fiji Barbarians went down 19-17 to Australia Gold in the Cup final.

Baber did not wish to reveal any names of the new talents that impressed him but said that the Central Coast 7s was very competitive.

"We played against a few of our local teams like Tabadamu, Uluinakau," he said.

"Some boys played for the Stallions as well. So yes there are names of some players I saw impressed in that competition which grows the numbers again that I love to bring in at some stage.

"That was a big reason for me going to the Central Coast 7s in the first place. I'm happy with what we have at the moment and we are progressing. I'm always aware that players are out there overseas who we need to get in and get them into speed as to how we play."

In pool play, the Fiji Barbarians defeated Australia University 41-0, Sunnybank 50-5 and Island Breeze 29-12.

In the quarter-final, Fiji Barbarians thrashed Uluinakau 45-0 and beat Tabadamu 28-14 in the semi-final.

Baber said they had a hard week of training in the leadup to the Central Coast 7s.
