Fijians start well

NATIONAL bowling reps Arun Kumar and Sheral Mar started their campaign at the World Singles Champion of Champions in fine form despite playing in tough conditions at St Johns Park in Sydney, Australia.

Kumar recorded five wins and two losses in his section to be in contention for the elimination rounds.

Sheral won four matches and lost three.

Team manager Curtis Mar said this was a world event where the national singles champions from each country competed against each other.

"There are 28 countries competing in the men's section and 23 countries competing in the women's section," Curtis said.

"The countries are split into two pools. Both of our representatives are from the Sheraton Bowling Club. Playing conditions have been very difficult with the greens running between 17 to 19 seconds with strong winds.

"Despite the conditions being very different to what we play on in Fiji, the duo have been performing exceptionally well.

"Arun lies in fifth place in his section while Sheral is in fourth place in her section.

"We have two more days of play to go before they determine if we have qualified for the medal play-off. To qualify both Sheral and Arun need to win their remaining matches.

"We have been fortunate to have a few Fiji supporters around. Former Vatukoula Gold Mine general manager Colin Patterson's wife Leanne and her friend Noreen, who play regularly in the Fiji Bowling Carnival, have been attending the games daily to support both Arun and Sheral. Nadi property operator Navin Morarji has also been around.

"We are expecting a visit by former national representatives Willow and Peter Fong and Maria Lum On. Having support has been very encouraging for the team," he said.
