Social responsibility

Lawrence Wara, Suva
Thursday, November 02, 2017

OUR PM has left with his entourage to chair the meeting of COP23 in Bonn, Germany, and we as a nation are behind him as we fight the global scourge called global warming.

But really, are we behind the PM on this on the local front? I ask this because here in Fiji one can see the destruction of our environment all in the name of progress and on the flip side to fill the pockets of those already on up-side in society.

I believe it is our social responsibility to take ownership of our own environment and do the little things right by not littering, follow hygienic practices and teach our children the correct way of disposing rubbish.

It would be a farce if the leader of our government is chairing a meeting of world leaders about the effect of climate change in the South Pacific and reducing carbon emissions when in his own back yard the common man continues to go against everything he is advocating.

Once we get this right only then can we move on to other social issues like teenage pregnancies, sexual exploitation of our children and how it has become a norm for us to have single parents or children born out of wedlock.

Come on Fiji, let's work together to tackle these issues and make Fiji the way the world should be,.

In the same breath I wish both the Bati and our Flying Fijians all the best.
