Thursday, November 02, 2017

FIJI Airways 7s assistant coach Saiasi Fuli sais the objective of sending a national side to the Silcon 7s in the United States was to expose new players.

He said top-class competition would help the team management gauge the players' and the team's standard in readiness for the forthcoming HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series.

The former national halfback said the team would face tough battles at the USA event becuse other top teams would be also there to test their combinations.

He said the side would be guided by experienced players such as skipper Jasa Veremalua and vice-captain Amenoni Nasilasila.

Fuli said the results did not matter most because he wanted to test the players before the beginning of the series.

"This tour is part of our long term development plan," he said.

"The result will not matter most, but exposing the players will be key priority. The results will look after itself.

"We want to see and expose the players especially the new ones so they gauge their level against the bests."

Fuli, who also guided a national team to Germany early this year, said they wanted to test out the new players in the side and best prepare them for the new 7s season.

"This is part of our long term plan from this year- in Germany we took six new players, we took four to the Central Coast and we are again taking five new players to the States.

"The whole purpose is to engage the new players to this type of top level competition."

"The competition is going to be tough because USA, Argentina, Samoa and England," he said.

The side is captained by Veremalua.
