Down, not out

INJURED Kane Evans says his injury is not really a loss to the Vodafone Fiji Bati side, but a chance for another player to shine in the Rugby League World Cup.

Dubbed the "Undertaker", Evans sported a bandaged arm and watched his teammates from the sidelines of the Mick Carney Toyota Park Stadium yesterday.

He was providing tips to some players.

"I am just grateful to be back in the team and help with the training, I'll probably be in camp for the rest of the week," he said.

Evans was injured in the first half of Fiji's 58-12 victory over USA last Saturday at the 1300 SMILES Stadium in Townsville.

"I was pretty frustrated," Evans said of his injury.

"Especially, with the year I had with the (Sydney) Roosters, I didn't get to play the last game, I got kicked out of the semi-final," he said. "I knew straightaway when I scored the try … I heard my bones break, my world cup was over."

But he has put his focus on helping his teammates and is very excited with what they could produce at the world cup.

"I have faith in the squad and I know they will do well. I know our squad can deliver. If you look at the last world cup at the Fijian team, someone comes through and surprise everyone. I am expecting the young talent to come through," Evans added.

And while feeling down, he has come to his teammates for solace.

"They lift me up when I am down, when they down I will lift them up, when they are down. We got each others backs. That's why I am still here this week."
