An inexplicable love for painting

IT'S hard to believe that Arvin Sukul painted 12 acrylic paintings in the space of one year. But that's just what he loves.

As visitors and art lovers alike explored the National Arts Exhibition at the Fiji National Provident Fund (FNPF) Boulevard in Suva, one couldn't help but notice the array of colours that made up one side of the wall in the room.

It was the 12 paintings that he did over the past year.

"I think I'm the only one with the most art paintings on display," he said with a laugh.

Growing up in Makoi, about eight miles from Suva towards Nausori, there was little room to explore his artistic side.

"From the get go straight after high school, I was managing my dad's family business," the part-time artist told us.

"I mean, I've always been interested in doing art but I just never had the time to pick up the brush."

But when he finally did, Arvin just couldn't stop.

"I can spend about 12 hours straight sitting in front of my canvas," he chuckled. "And if I don't paint for one or two days I feel like I'm missing something and until today I cannot explain the passion I have for my art. It's something that comes from inside of me and to be honest it cannot be explained."

It's evident Arvin loves to explore colours ranging from the vibrant to the outburst of bright orange and red hues that seem to capture curious onlookers.

"I like to explore many ideas for my paintings for example the 'Buddha' painting, I am a fan of feng shui and the colours I put have to be vibrant, I want it to give positive vibes not negativity."

And where does he get his inspiration from?

"I would say my family — my wife and kids are my inspiration."

The National Arts Exhibition is Arvin's first exhibition. Earlier this year he won the silver prize under the traditional category in the AFL National Artwork Competition.

"I hope to showcase as much in this exhibition. At least I can know my pricings and what people want because this is something new I'm bringing to the market," he said.
