SINCE the instigation of the Micro and Small Business Grants (MSBG) in 2014, Government has invested a total of $15.9 million to support 16,605 recipients all over the country.

This was revealed by Minister for Industry, Trade and Tourism Faiyaz Koya who also said the MSBG has thus far given a marvellous result in improving the growth of all Fijians.

Speaking during the handover of cheques in Nabouwalu over the weekend, Mr Koya said many of the MSBG were part of the informal sector and hence their contribution to the Fijian economy has gone unnoticed.

Mr Koya said the MSBG initiative had enabled the transition from informal to the formal sector.

"The continuous support given to the MSBG initiative portrays the Fijian Government's commitment to improve the standard of living and provide sustainable livelihoods for all Fijians," he said.

"The MSBG initiative also serves as a platform in mainstreaming informal micro and small operators into the formal sector.

"This will assist the Government in formulating policies to enhance sustainable growth in our MSME sector."

Mr Koya reiterated that the grant was not a handout, but a leg-up.

"The purpose of the grant is to improve your livelihood in the long-run," he told cheque recipients.

"A simple message I have been informing to all recipients in every venues I been, the ministry will undertake monitoring and assessment.

"The intended purpose of this exercise will be to evaluate and gauge the impact of this assistance towards your business and to gauge also if it is used for the intended purpose.

"The monitoring and evaluation will enable us to improve in allocation of the grants to different sectors."

He said therefore, it was important to place Governments investment in right places and utilise them efficiently to bring better growths and results in our communities.
