Yavala: Refine those natural skills

FIJI Airways Sevens players need to have their natural skills refined and not supressed if their performance were to be consistent in the upcoming season.

These were the words of former Fiji 7s Melrose World Cup winning trainer Samuela Yavala.

"At the moment they are using the players' natural skills and if they are to use that, then they need to allocate enough time to train those natural skills in order to meet the standard of international level," Yavala said.

"Players' natural skill needed to be refined in order to be competitive in the international level. Natural rugby talents can be found all over the place in Fiji, you can find them in the streets or on some field. But that needs to be taken to a place where they can be refined and in turn produce an international calibre player."

He said at the moment the players' skills had not been refined, they were taken from the local tournaments and straight into the international level.

"International level is professional then we have to do more off-season training and this is the problem with Fiji, we do not rely mostly on off-season training and unless we get into that then we can mould more of this.

He said the process of refining players could take some time but necessary and that was the sort of things the Fiji 7s team needed.

"If this is not done, then their performance will be like the teeth of a saw, where at one point we are down here, then at one point we are up there and this indicated that there was no consistency in their development," he said.
