FIJI Barbarians went down to Australia Gold 19-17 during the Central Coast 7s in Australia in a world-class final.

The Jerry Tuwai-captained side started off on a high note but because of some simple mistakes cost them the game

Vatemo Ravouvou lost the ball a few metres from the try line that resulted in Australia scoring their first try.

A successful conversion to lead 7-0 before quick defence and attack that nearly resulted in another try to the Aussies but unfortunately it was a knock-on. A scrum from the Australian side resulted in another try with a successful conversion extending their points to 14-0.

The Fijian players were everywhere trying their best to break their opponent's defence. Luck was on their side when they were given a penalty after a high tackle on Waisea Nacuqu.

A kick from the sideline from Ravouvou resulted in a try from Nacuqu but unfortunately the conversion was unsuccessful and the points were 14-5.

Gold medallist Apisai Domolailai with some fancy footwork scored the second try a few minutes into the second half but Ravouvou failed to kick it in narrowing the points to 14-10.

With few minutes left the Aussies fought on to score another unconverted try to seal the deal with 19-10. Fiji fought back with a try to Mesulame Kunavula but they were too late to strike luck.

Coach Gareth Baber had earlier said that he would be looking at each player's performance.

"In this tournament I will be looking to challenge the players with their work individually in defence but specifically discipline in the tackle and ensuring that we keep 7 on the field," he said.
