Plans for Fiji lifters

NATIONAL weight-lifting coach Joe Vueti says national weight-lifters need to work on their endurance and stamina before they compete in the 2017 Pacific Mini Games in Vanuatu in December.

The weight-lifters had their first trial at the National Fitness Centre in Laucala Bay, Suva yesterday.

Vueti said he was happy with the performance by the weight-lifters.

"The competition was to test the weight-lifters after they came back from a break after competing in Commonwealth Championship which was held in Gold Coast, Australia earlier this year," he said.

"Most of the weight-lifters have strength and power, but they still need to do a lot of endurance like speed work which is easy to do and they can get that in one or two weeks.

"The area which would take time to develop is power and strength."

Lifters Apolonia Vaivai, Manueli Tulo, Maria Liku, Patrick Veidreyaki, Sofia Kinikinilau, Seruwaia Malani were part of the trial.

"We are on the right path for the Pacific Mini Games and the Commonwealth Games next year. I will be training the elite weight-lifters in Suva since I will be based here. I will train the top athletes who have qualified for the Commonwealth Games.

"I am bringing them to Suva while the weight-lifters for the Youth Olympic Games will continue to train in Levuka."
