Bus drivers' frustrations

Kirti Patel, Lautoka
Saturday, October 28, 2017

I WAS sitting in the bus travelling towards Saweni, Lautoka, and since I was sitting right in front and the driver was just close to me, I thought to ask about the eticketing top-up setup in the bus.

He said it was not in his bus and he didn't even intend to have it unless there's a Vodafone staff member there to assist the passengers with it.

According to him, drivers including him are already having enough with this new process and topping up cards would be an added responsibility.

I told him it had been announced that all the bus drivers would and should have top-up cards and he said a Vodafone staff member surely should be there to do that because drivers are supposed to be concentrating on the steering wheel and dealing with passengers in terms of the normal eticketing transactions unless they get a good pay rise.

As much as I agree with these drivers' frustrations and hope their grievances are sorted out soon, I am curious about the top-up issue in the bus.

Frankly speaking, in all the buses I have sat in so far the drivers said they do not do top-ups in the bus. Probably someone can remove this curiosity for me on why not despite it being announced.
