Your

government

I LIKE what the New Zealand Prime Minister said, "I like to introduce to you your new Government". Never mind who wins the election it should remain the people's Government.

Police

presence

I AM not a Mahendra Chaudhry fan. But unlike Simon Hazelman ( FT 27/10 ) I did not find anything "absurd" in Mr Chaudhry's statement that the police force should not be involved in anything other than maintaining law and order in next year's election. What's absurd about that? That has always been the singular role of the police in all democratic elections.

Protest

march

SUKHA Singh (26/10) and Rajend Naidu (27/10) should know that to assemble peacefully and protest is a constitutional right under section 18 of the Constitution. People are simply exercising their rights.

Traffic

woes

SINGAPOREANS won't be able to drive additional cars in a small city-state after a ban to keep the island from being overrun with vehicles and clogging traffic. Fiji can take its cue from here.

Minister's

appointment

PAT Vuli's confirmation of the gazetted appointment (27/10/17) raises questions. Does the A-G have the authority under law to appoint himself as Acting Minister for Health? Yes, I do agree, why was the Assistant Minister for Health overlooked and what happened to the Minister for Health?

Marijuana

or wine

SIMON Hazelman in his letter 26/10 encourages me to try marijuana; may I assure him that I am fully aware of marijuana's medical benefits to one of my age. However, I have no wish to be an additional burden to the taxpayers by taking up space in one of the nation's prison institutions, where some of this country's hierarchy would gladly place me. Instead, I restrict myself to the proven benefits of red wine, (sadly overtaxed to an almost unbelievable level) which fortunately, as I write, is still legal for one of my age. I commend Mr Hazelman to do likewise.
