WEIGHTLIFTING Fiji will conduct its first trial today as part of selection to the Mini Pacific Games in Vanuatu in December.

The trial is also to look at potential reps to the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, Argentina, next year.

Athletes such as Apolonia Vaivai, Seruwaia Malani, Maria Mareta, Manueli Tulo, Taniela Rainibogi, Poama Qaqa, Patrick Veidreyaki will be among others competing for tickets to the games.

National coach Jo Vueti said athletes needed to prove themselves.

"These trials, on October 28 and November 11, are crucial for athletes vying for a spot to the Pacific Mini Games in Vanuatu," he said.

"We have a mix of elite and young athletes. Top athletes such as Apolonia and Manueli Tulo will be competing in the trials. About 12 elite athletes who are based in Levuka, Ovalau will be competing. We have set our criteria high so athletes won't relax.

"Eileen Cikamatana will not be attending the trials because she is away in New Caledonia training. Suva-based athletes will be putting the pressure on Levuka elite athletes this weekend, so, it's going to be a thriller."

The trials will be held at the National Fitness Centre.
