NADI with a host of district reps is the top seed for the SM Koya Memorial Cup Championship which starts at Churchill Park in Lautoka this morning.

The Jetsetters have roped players such as Shafeem Buksh, Sheik Moshin, Zainal Hussain and Arfaaz Ali to boost their campaign.

Nadi is in Pool D which only has one other team Drasa Vitogo a scenario which allows both teams to progress to the quarter-finals despite the group result.

New Zealand is the lone overseas team in the two day event.

The football championship is organised by the Ma'unatul Islam Sports Association which is the sporting arm of the Ma'unatul Islam Association of Fiji.

The association's president Mohammed Rafiq said the late Siddiq Moidin Koya (SM Koya) was the founding member of their parent body.

Rafiq said the main aim of the event was to unite the different races in Fiji and from abroad through their football festival.

"Mid next year we will be organising the AR Manu Memorial Inter District Championship," he said.

"We will be inviting four overseas teams and there will be 12 local teams."

In the opening match at 8am, Saweni will take on Meigunyah. The quarter-finals, semi-finals and final will be played tomorrow.

SM Koya Memorial Cup Championship Groups: Pool A: Saweni, Sarava, Meigunyah; Pool B: New Zealand, Natova, Lautoka; Pool C: Nadroga, Vitogo, Cuvu; Pool D: Drasa Vitogo, Nadi.
