New lease on life for 37

THE Sydney Adventist Hospitals Operation Open Heart team has been able to successfully operate on 37 patients during their two-week visit to Fiji.

Operation Open Heart team co-ordinator Melanie Windus said she expected yesterday to be the last day of operations for the Sydney team.

By the end of today (yesterday) we will have operated on all those who were scheduled to receive operations, said Mrs Windus.

We had brought enough equipment to operate on up to 40 patients but some declined to have the surgery and that, of course, was their choice.

Mrs Windus said all their patients were doing well with each staying in the Intensive Care Unit for about 24 hours before being transferred out to the wards.

Mrs Windus said the operations had not been difficult for the surgeons with all the patients receiving the same care they would have received if theyd been treated overseas.

Of course, it is a different environment for the surgeons to work in but the operations have all gone well, she said.

The team will move on to Papua New Guinea for more operations.
