THE Fiji Local Government Officers Association (FLGOA) celebrated International Labour Day at the Lautoka City Council this week.

Established in 1969 the association has pursued with challenges and struggles to ensure workers rights are protected and fair labour practices are adhered to by the municipalities around the country.

FLGOA president Rouhit Kumar said the municipal councils had been providing terms and conditions as per the provisions of Collective Agreement but there were negotiations where staff were left out when they were casual or on contracts.

He said there were no common elements that protected them.

"With the change in council administration, the association maintained the cordial relationship and the issues tested the unity, structural strength, determination, competence and purposeful commitment to safeguard the hard-earned rights and interests of the members," said Mr Singh.

"The association progressed from strength to strength and overcame hurdles and obstacles. The association has also assisted members who were affected by January and March 2012 flood by providing assistance amounting to $3200.

"This was done through the establishment of Social Relief Fund through the contribution by the members."
