KINOYA II created the biggest upset of the opening day of the FBC TV National Volleyball Championships when they defeated Raiwai IV two sets to nill at the National Gymnasium yesterday.
Fiji Volleyball Federation general secretary Rosa Dalituicama said it was an exciting match that was dominated by the men from Kinoya.
"Kinoya II had a set of young players and they were up against a Raiwai IV which had some very experienced players," Dalituicama said.
"The Raiwai team was the favourite but Kinoya took the game to them and won 2-0," she said.
Dalituicama described day one of competition as a low key start but expects it to intensify today and tomorrow.
"It (competition) has not really been as exciting as we had hoped.
"Friday and Saturday are the last two days of competition so we are expecting it to get tougher."
Meanwhile, Dalituicama said Suva and defending champions Kinoya were the inform teams in the tournament and were likely to reach the finals in the womens division.
"Suva has the services of overseas-based Ana Seniloli and they have been impressive and then there are the defending championships, Kinoya, led by the Delai sisters, Claire and Ilisapeci.
"Ilisapeci Delai is one of those players to look out for in this tournament and for years to come."
Dalituicama said the Suva and USP mens teams were looking promising in the tournament so far.
She also reminded players, officials and spectators to be mindful of their behaviour and discipline.
"For the first time we have received a five-year sponsorship and we want to prove to our sponsors, FBC TV, that they can trust us and continue supporting us," Dalituicama said.
Day two competition of the National Volleyball Championship continues at the National Gymnasium today.
