Egg sales under scrutiny

The Health Ministry was commended for taking proactive measures to protect consumers from the sale of rotten eggs in supermarkets and municipal markets around the country.

Consumer Council of Fiji chief executive officer Premila Kumar said eggs were perishable and should be stored properly before it was sold to consumers.

"We understand this will be a costly affair for the market vendors but the safety of food products cannot be compromised," she said yesterday.

Market vendors were notified by the Food Safety Unit to improve the means of storage of eggs sold to consumers, and have until this Friday to abide by the regulation.

"Refrigerating the eggs would ensure the eggs are fresh.

"With egg, one can only know the inside status after buying and often consumers end up wasting money on bad eggs unknown to consumers.

"There is no exception to this rule.

"It is not only the market vendors who should ensure this safety standard but supermarkets as well.

"The council will assist Ministry of Health in the surveillance work to ensure the law is enforced," Ms Kumar said.

Like the Food Safety Unit, the council received complaints against bad eggs sold to consumers.

Food Safety Unit senior health officer Samuela Bolalailai stood firm by the decision saying, "We don't want things like this (rotten egg sales) to happen on our shift, and certainly not at the expense of the people's health and expenses."
