Lawyer requests for suspended sentence

A FIJI National Provident Fund former chief executive officer's lawyer has requested a suspended sentence for her client, saying the accused has suffered enough.

Samanunu Vaniqi told High Court judge Justice Priyantha Fernando the suspended sentence was an annex included in her client's mitigation submission.

She said community work was another option, saying the court earlier heard Rokovunisei was involved in work at his village in Tailevu.

The court earlier heard from local businessman Dan Lobendhan, who is the head of the church Rokovunisei attends.

When asked if the Kingdom Leadership Church was willing to supervise the accused if he was ordered to do community work, Mr Lobendahn agreed. He also agreed to provide monthly reports if required by the High Court in Suva.

Ms Vaniqi said the media had covered the case and her client's family had endured a lot.

Also, she told Justice Fernando her client had spent 33 days in remand, including Christmas and New Year's days.

Ms Vaniqi said Rokovunisei spent another four days in remand since he was convicted last Thursday and he had to wait four years for his trial.

These, she said, were punishment enough.

Ms Vaniqi called on Justice Fernando to exercise his powers under the Sentencing and Penalties Decree.

Justice Fernando will sentence Rokovunisei tomorrow.
