Growing up with Marvel comic books has had an effect on the superhero loving world.
An evidence of this is the screening of the much-awaited Avengers. In Suva, Village 6 fully packed four cinemas on the second night of its screening, two for normal 2D version and two for the 3D version. According to Village 6 representative, Rina Khan, 3562 watched the movie on Wednesday and Thursday, before the weekend which probably meant many in the audience were adults. With the holidays coming up and the Coca-Cola Games cooled off, it would be best to buy your tickets in advance or you will not get seats.
Although Marvel comics is a little over 70 years, only now has it been put on display to the fullest capacity, special effects have brought to life this comic characters and made them look their best with famous and much-loved actors.
Avengers boasts a very attractive and expensive cast, with names like Robert Downey Jr, Scarlett Johansson, Chris Evans, Samuel L. Jackson and so forth.
It also has a good collection of characters ranging from the first super-hero Captain America, the great Hulk, the stylist Iron Man, and the buffed and capped Thor.
Also assisting them is the beautiful Black Widow and my favourite archer Hawkeye.
Also attending the party or I must say starting the party was Loki, Thor's brother from the magical realm of Asgard. He was evil, amazing and of course, pretty.
Nick Furry, director of S.H.I.E.L.D was the non-super powered human who gathered those Avengers to save the world.
It's amazing to see these characters shine as individuals in their own movies, but it was even better seeing them unite on the big screen.
Although it would have been great to see the entire marvel characters in one movie, it probably wouldn't work out for Chris Evans playing both the 'Human Torch' and the leading 'Captain'.
Avengers saw new light to some of the characters like Dr Bruce Banner controlling his alter ego or as he likes to call him in the movie "the other guy".
Also Black Widow and Hawkeye seem to be in love and Captain American took the commanding seat rather than Iron man.
Scarlett Johanson being the only girl and non-super powered heroess, did a good job shining through as a one of the boys, rather than a love-interest or an eye-candy for the male audience. Especially when she was on the phone, tied to a chair and tells an agent to "give me a minute", while the phone is still on her shoulder to her ears, she starts knocking out people.
Haweye, Jerry Renner, I think is the real hero, because he has a real skill set with those sniper eyes and arrows and probably the only one that can bring the Hulk down with his tranquiliser-tipped arrows.
It was a bit weird though seeing Chris Evans so serious and call a fighter pilot 'son', but then again Captain America is 92 years old if you do the math. I must say he has a good life since his scrawny geeky days, now he's buffed, has superpowers and stopped aging for about 60 years.
Chris Hemsworth did a better job with Thor in The Avengers. In Thor, he seems to lack acting skills, but with the Avengers, he cleaned out the cheesiness. His voice has got to be one of his best features.
As for Mr Stark and his new "ugly building" and egotistical ways which never seems to amuse me, but when he dons that Iron suit and says lines like "if we can't protect the Earth, you can be sure we'll avenge it!" he becomes the iron hero. He pretty much has all the funny tag lines in this movie. He also injects the humour in the movie especially when there is friction between him and Captain America. One guy is flash, in spotlight and smooth, and the other guy is selfless and in the shadows and they have to get along. They explore that, and make it fun.
Now without giving out too many spoilers the story is about Loki and the superpowered object called the cosmic cube. As you've seen in Captain America: The First Avenger, it was used by Red Skull, he got either teleported or burnt by it. Now it's in the hands of Loki and he has used it to enter the earth and destroy it.
So the Avengers and the S.H.E.l.L.D team have joined forces to stop Loki and his bunch of Aliens from succeeding.
Some things did not quite connect for me ù it should have been given more thought. First was how Thor returns to earth, with the Bifrost Bridge destroyed, Loki came through the portal created by the blue beautiful cosmic cube. Thor just apeared out of nowhere, I'm sure a lot would agree with me, that lost a few points. Secondly, there wasn't much depth on how Bruce Banner was able to control the Hulk, it just happened overnight, in one scene he was close to killing the Black Widow and the next day they were fighting side by side.
I guess they didn't want to dwell on the super-heroes as individuals ù everybody is just an arm of the octopus, as the Avengers or they just didn't want to take up too much reel time.
But overall this movie is one to watch. It had it all, some would probably say it lacked romance, every movie has romance, but this one has what it takes to call it a blockbuster. So go watch your superheroes and be
marveled for two and a half hours.
Before I forget, don't leave the cinema untill the credits are done, there is a scene you need to see at the end of the movie showing who is actually behind the Loki ambush that will lead to the sequel.
