MERESEINI Naidau of Jasper Williams High School (JWHS) won the first gold medal on day-one of the 2012 Coca-Cola Games yesterday at the National Stadium.

The 15-year old outran 26 other athletes to win the girls open 1500 metres event under the scorching morning sun.

A product of Nadarivatu Secondary School, Naidau clocked a time of 5.01.70 minutes to win the race.

"I am happy to win this race," Naidau said.

"Training at Jasper is easy compared to Nadarivatu because training was harder there (Nadarivatu)," she said.

The forth former was given a scholarship by JWHS after the end of the school last year.

She said she would now prepare for the her next event, the open girls 3000m to be held today at 8.15am.

"I will be running against my sister, Vitalina Tabua, who is still in Nadarivatu Secondary School.

"It's going to be a hard race but I will give it my best shot and I will not give chance to my sister," Naidau said.

This is Naidau's third gold medal at the Fiji Secondary School Athletics Finals as last year she won gold in both the 1500 and 3000m events.

She said she was aiming to repeat her feat again this year.

Meanwhile, Vaturova Koroalau High School's Ana Maria won the silver medal with a time of 5.09.19 minutes.

Third place went to Melaia Bola of Wainimakutu Secondary School with a time of 5.09.47 minutes.
