THE post-mortem examination of a four month-old baby who died in Savusavu on Wednesday will be carried out today, according to the police.

Police spokesman Inspector Atunaisa Sokomuri said the baby's mother was still being questioned by officers at Savusavu Police Station over the death.

"This is a very delicate issue and we want to investigate thoroughly given the mother's physically-challenged condition," he said.

"The examination will be carried out tomorrow (today) and we hope to determine the cause of death."

The incident has sparked warnings from the police for family members to help mothers with newborn babies at home.

"At least, family members should offer a helping hand to those mothers because they have extra loads on their shoulders," Insp Sokomuri said.

It was earlier reported the single mother allegedly bathed her baby and lay him down to sleep on the bed.

The baby then turned and fell into the bucket of water his mother just bathed him in.
