A MEASURE of optimism has returned to flood-ravaged Ba with the opening of a poultry business yesterday.

Agriculture Minister Joketani Cokanasiga, who was chief guest, commended Ba couple Rai Prakash and his wife for achieving a milestone in business amid the devastation.

He said the opening of Awesome Chicks Supplies Hatchery was a gesture of encouragement to the people, especially farmers.

"We have just witnessed the devastating effect of the floods here in the west and I must commend Mr and Mrs Prakash for their accomplishment," he said.

"The project is a testimony of government's commitment to encourage the concept of public and private partnership in economic development."

Mr Prakash thanked the government for assisting him.

"Government gave $25,000 adding up to the $30,000 contribution I made to get the business running," he said.

"I have sold more than 24,000 chicks to local farmers since the commencement of the business in 2010.

"And I am planning to sell more this year."
