Page 1: Germs to fight mill pollution

Labasa Mill has ordered 20 million micro organisms from the United States in a bid to revolutionise its mill pollution control system.

The germs are being bought from the Zama Group in Cleveland, Ohio, which specialises in energy conservation products. The use of the organisms called "Liquid Live Micro Organisms (LLMO) to control industrial pollution will be unique not only in Fiji but also in the region.The introduction of the LLMO and an aqua-lator machine will stop any silting and eradicate foul smell from the mill effluent.

Bau oil hunt bid starts

The search for oil in Fiji took another step forward yesterday as oilmen started putting together a giant drilling rig to probe the Bau area. The rig which went assembled will stand about 100-ft, will be transported piece by piece to the proposed drilling site at Bau, Tailevu.

Page 3: Setareki wins through

Last year, Setareki Seru, a form 6 student at Marist Brothers High School, began to lose hi sight.

"By March, I was partially blind and I could see light only very faintly."

Today, after 13 months of blindness, Setareki knows he may never see again.

Ministry in clamp on drug shortage

The medical superintendent of the Colonial War Memorial Hospital, Dr Ken Lal, has been told not to talk to the Press about shortage of drugs at the hospital. The instructions were issued by the Ministry of Health while it made investigations. The Minister, Mr Mohammed Ramzan, admitted yesterday that shortages could apply to injectible antibiotics used for high blood pressure and heart complaints.

Page 16: $100,000 worth of colour

A new $100,000 two-colour Komori Sprint printing machine was commissioned with a tanoa of yaqona by the general manager of The Fiji Times, Mr Garry Barker yesterday. Standing with Mr Barker is the demonstration expert for the machine, Mr Tom Hunt from Auckland and The Fiji Times factory manager, Mr Magnus Mitchell.

Page 1: Teacher stoned by election gang

A victim of a stoning gang which raided a National Federation Party election meeting at Nasinu is recovering from a gash in the head at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital in Suva. Mr Vidya Sadanand (24) teacher of Nasinu five miles was injured when he was hit by a stone thrown by youths shouting "vote for the Alliance" at the meeting on Thursday night.

Death tablets stolen in Suva

A carton of highly dangerous sodium nitrate tablets has been stolen from Suva wharf. If taken, the tablets could cause death within a few hours. The Government pharmacy said yesterday that 40 tins were missing.

Page 3: Housing Authority replies in loan wrangle

The Housing Authority has made a public statement about the row involving its $14,000 loan to the wife of a Government assistant minister, Assistant Minister for Social Services, Mr Krishna Subba Reddy. The HA's chairman, Father Dermot Hurley, said the practice was to grant housing loans to housewives with the loan guaranteed by either a working husband or sons.

Ratu Penaia quits Senate

Ratu Penaia Ganilau has resigned from the Senate in which he has been Leader of Government Business. His resignation was handed to the President of the Senate, Senator R.L Munro yesterday. Ratu Penaia is a candidate for the Vanua Levu North and West national roll seat.
