Fuel prices will increase from tomorrow, Attorney-General and Minister for Commerce Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum announced yesterday.

He made the announcement with representatives from the Fiji Fuel Retailers Association, oil companies and the Commerce Commission in attendance.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said the decision for the increase was made after the normal quarterly review on world market prices and its effects on fuel retailers in the country.

Commerce Commission's chairman Mahendra Reddy said the increase was beyond the control of local stakeholders.

"Since December last year, quarterly prices of fuel have increased and we have had to make changes to the wholesale and retail price to cater for the effect," he said.

Mr Reddy said Fiji was in the unfortunate position of being a price taker and changes to world market prices were bound to influence local markets.

He attributed the global price increase to the current tension in the Middle East and increased demands in Europe during this winter season.

Oil company Total Fiji's refining and marketing managing director, David Kalife, said petrol companies were subject to global supply and demand activity.

Pacific Energy's managing director Roko Nabalarua said oil companies had no control over the spike in oil prices.

The A-G also said the country was looking at other ways to mitigate global fuel price increases.

"We have to reduce our dependancy on imports and look at other fuel sources such as renewable energy," he said.

The last increase was implemented last year.
