THE Waya Rugby Union is aiming for a successful season after kicking off with a sevens tournament a fortnight ago.
This year Waya, together with Naviti and Viwa, will field a combined team in the Southern Rally in August.
WRU president Jerry Sovatabua said the 7s tournament had set the platform for the new season.
"The Watisoni Votu-captained Wadigi Babas won the tournament at the Ratu Naivalu Memorial School ground," Sovatabua said.
"They defeated Colens Sabeto 21-7 in the final.
"The Wadigi Babas team included players from the Vuda Blues club of Lautoka. They received $2500.
"Lomati One took out the plate, Somosomo Blues won the bowls while Petra Babas walked away with the shield. Defending champion Vio was bundled out in pool play."
The tournament was sponsored by Westbus and Hall Dredging Limited.
Sovatabua said WRU had an ongoing development program which involved hiring of experts in coaching and administration to develop a strategic plan for the upcoming years.
He said they hoped to provide new training facilities and equipment to improve the player's skills and fitness level in the future.
"We want to support our unemployed youths so that they could earn an income either by donning the national rugby jersey or securing a contract overseas," Sovatabua said.
"For the past two years, Waya has reached the finals of the Southern Rally. This is a testimony to the success, growth and commitment of WRU since its inception."
