FIFTY-FIVE firefighters sacrificed their Easter weekend to clean schools and towns that were affected by the floods in the Western Division.

National Fire Authority's chief fire officer Qionilau Moceitai commended the firefighters for their efforts.

"Some of these officers were also affected by the floodwaters which damaged their homes," he said.

"Despite the difficult circumstances, our firefighters have reported to duty to assist in the cleaning up of towns and schools in the Western Division."

Mr Moceitai said the authority's top priority was to clean flood-affected schools before school starts today.

"Our fire-fighters are cleaning up the debris and mud left behind by floodwaters in the schools and town areas.

"So far, we have cleaned 13 schools," he said.
