SCHOOLS in the Western and Central divisions will be closed this week.
For the Western Division, divisional education officer West Lorima Voravora informed government stakeholders at a briefing in Lautoka yesterday that schools would be closed because many were used as evacuation centres.
Thrity nine of the 117 evacuation centres are schools.
"We will assess the situation at the end of the week and make an announcement on whether schools will open on Tuesday," Mr Voravora said.
Schools in the Central Division will be closed until further notice.
Ministry of Education permanent secretary Dr Brij Lal said students should listen to the radio for further updates.
He highlighted that students should make good use of their time at home and not to go into high risk areas.
"This is an opportunity for students to study and also to catch up with their school work as most of the schools will be having their examination at the end of the month," Dr Lal said.
