Shanti Dut turns 75

FIREFIGHTERS burst in on the 75th birthday celebrations of the Fiji Times' weekly vernacular newspaper Shanti Dut after smoke from the candles triggered a fire alarm.

But celebrations continued afterwards with Shanti Dut editor Nilam Kumar stressing how important the publication was in promotion of reconciliation, racial harmony and peace.

Fiji Times editor-in-chief Netani Rika said: "Shanti Dut is a sign of commitment to vernacular journalism and tribute to the Indian community which has been an integral part of our nation since 1879. We will continue to support the propagation of the Indian language through the Shanti Dut hopefully for the next 75 years."
